When we think about innovation, we often associate it with white lab coat-wearing scientists or nerdy technologists working on the next big thing. Product-centric organizations are focused on waiting for the big breakthrough that will come from the lab. In the customer-empowered economy, we can no longer wait for that one big breakthrough. Creating exceptional experiences is about creating breakthroughs every day for every customer. Innovations need to redesign things that every employee does every day in every action.

We need to define and foster innovation differently and unleash the imagination and creative power of our people. From website design to process design to the way we solve customer problems, all are opportunities to innovate. Writing terms-and-conditions documents that treat the customer with respect and speak a simple language is an example of an easy, yet impactful, innovation. Innovation must occupy every aspect of the customer journey. It needs to be an integral part of every interaction with customers. Employees need to know that innovation is in the small, everyday actions. These innovations need to be embraced and practiced by all. Your organization is the sum total of the innovative and creative actions of all your people.
